How High Should A 50 Inch Plasma HDTV Be Above The Floor

I Am Building An Entertainment Center.  How high of the floor should a tv be? I have answers ranging from 3/4 an inch off the ground to 5 feet up in the air an everything in between.
Since most people have their TV turned off 90% of the time, they just place TV where it looks best for the room’s decor.  But how high should a 50 inch Plasma HDTV be above the floor?

For optimum viewing, the eyes of a viewer (or ‘the sight line,’) should be level with the center of the display’s screen. To extrapolate a bit further – combining personal experience with SMPTE recommended practice RP 166-1995 – for typical home viewing conditions I recommend that the viewer restrict the vertical positioning of a display to no higher than the bottom third of the screen and no lower than the middle of the screen while strictly adhering to the recommended critical viewing distance*.
From your normal seated viewing position locate the point on the wall that is approximately level with your eyes. You should place the bottom of your 50-inch PDP within 8 to 12 inches below that point.
*(3.3 times the picture height [which is approximately equivalent to a 30º subtended angle,] is the recommended optimum viewing distance, or 81 inches for a 50-inch 16×9 high definition, high resolution display. Taking into account both the SMPTE and the THX recommendations, the recommended viewing distance for said HD display will be roughly 70 inches ± 10 inches.)

If your couch is going to be set back 10 feet then 5 feet up should be good. If your couch is closer then lower is better.

My additional advice is to purchase an articulating mount for your plasma unit.
This will enable you to change the viewing angle/height later if at some time in the future might need or want to re-arrange your viewing area.

It depends where the hi frequency speakers are located on the TV.When you are seated the speakers should be at ear level to hear the best sound .The height of the actual screen is not that important. It is the distance you are from the screen that matters.
