+

  • great picture
  • no image retention
  • the sound is good
  • PLENTY of HDMI inputs
  • comes with a gorgeous desk top stand

-

  • reflective
  • loud buzz/ humm (can hear even 30 FT away)

The loud buzz is not heard if the movie is on loud but not all tv viewing is with big sound. Not everybody can live with that. Unfortunately the buzzing was so bad that few customers ended up taking it back.
Sumsung even sent technician over twice to replace 2 different boards but buzzing was still there.
Finaly they have found that the TVs have “no fix” for it, in fact it’s not a “problem” to Samsung therefore not something that can be “fixed” so beware.

Picture is beautiful though. And the major part report that a slight buzz is barely noticeable when watching a movie, or no buzzing at all is coming from the unit. So this is no concern.

How To Stop TV Buzzing

Buzzing is something that most plasma owners will experience. Little buzzing may be normal, especially at altitude, but often can be fixed by changing up your setup or adding a core on your power cord near the plug. Try using a different HDMI port for your input. Try snaking the cords to the set in a different way, making the HDMI or other input separate from the power cord.

Samsung PN58B550 calibration

In case you are a little concerned that reds and greens seems too strong, then calibrate your screen and keep the black level off, and it will clear everything up.

Concerned About Image Retention?

Adjusting a TV set’s picture is something you must do as the factory normally has the color and brightness and contrast turned too high.
Basically for the first 100/200 hours (some disagreement there) you must lower the brightness & contrast and some other settings which should help, in the long run, from getting “Permanent” IR or “burn-in. The TV has a screen scan that you can run to get rid of IR. It scans white then progressively to black. Bottom Line: IR not an issue!

Panasonic VIERA S1 Series TC-P58S1 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

Best 58 Inch Flat Screen TV

Panasonic VIERA S1 Series TC-P58S1 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV, Black

Panasonic 2009, Electronics, Too low to display

4.5

This Panasonic Viera S1 TC-P58S1 is the 2nd bestselling TV. Customers’ rating 4,5 stars!

+

  • picture is fantastic
  • glare is minimal
  • many HDMI inputs

-

  • green push, requiring service menu tweaks to eliminate, (but impossible to eliminate completely)
  • black level prematurely highten or become grayer in a very short amount of time

Panasonic gradually looses its inky blacks and in just a 600 to 1000 plus hours of viewing produces grayer pictures instead of the inky blacks that Panasonic advertises on it’s TV and print media. The blacks fade to a level similar to a mid level LCD from 2006, and “Most affected users report that Image Retention and Phosphorescence become significantly worse post-elevation.”

Sure enough there is at least one reviewer who basically spammed his/her review. Its almost like they have a financial interest with Panasonic. Why do I think so?

Here is the opposition that says –
“This tv as with most plasmas will mellow with time. They are very harsh at first, way to bright. The contrast of that to the black and the brightness fading will give you the impression of fade. When in actuality I found that it has after 400 hrs, gotten crisper and more acurate. I would prefer to go into the service menu and bring it up to almost V10 specs, but at this time I dont care nor do I want to void my warranty, which is doubled when purchased with visa sig cards and they have an awsome 5 yr plan.”

Panasonic Plasma Burn In

For a month don’t let the plasma tv burn in keeping the contrast and color low as pixels stabilize. PS3 games and Blu-ray on this tv are mindblowing! 1080i & 720p is also outstanding.

How To Hook Up XBOX360 to Panasonic Plasma

It won’t accept 1080p over component (think XBOX over component – you **must** set your XBOX360 to 1080i **prior** to hooking it up to this Panasonic!!!) Once you do that, it looks fine, but it was a hassle, since that is not prominently mentioned in the setup guide.

Final note

If there is any merit to these claims, its better for all to have it as widespread public knowledge so that Panasonic and Samsung is forced to provide a fix in the future.

For now either you don’t get or don’t notice the issue as there are only isolated cases so far. I hope this review helped.
