Image Retention Plasma TVs
Stop Image Retention or how to prevent any burn in issues on your plasma TV.
If playing xbox on your 50 inch plasma and it leaves an image retention, is there a way how can you stop it from happening?
The image retention is caused by a combination of video persistence and your TV’s intensity or brightness being set too high. If you have a lot of loading screens, or gauges that are always up, they may get burned in permanently.
The games you are playing apparently do not have a great deal of moving scenes and varying image levels. This can cause “image burn-in,” where you will see an “imprint”, “retention” or “ghost image” on your screen even when watching another video source and even when the TV is turned off.
Do not allow this condition to occur or continue.
It can cause irreparable or even very expensive to repair damage to the plasma’s screen. However, the newer plasma TV’s have eliminated the image retention problem with orbit and pixel shift technology.
How Can You Cure Image Retention
Do The Following To Prevent Image Retention On Your Plasma Screen

- It is important to reduce the screen brightness or intensity to a lower level especially for the new TV. The lower the level the better for your television. Use the minimum level that still produces good picture quality and color saturation.
- If the TV has a GAME mode – use it, while watching movies, use the MOVIE mode.
- If the TV has “pixel shift” or anti-burn-in technology, make sure it is enabled and functioning properly. Read in your TV’s manual how to turn on all the image retention features.
- Do not play any video source that tends to be a bright static image that does not move or change very often. For the first 100-200 hours if you want to play extra cautious, avoid those games for the time being, or pause every few minutes or do something that will change what’s being displayed on the screen. Turn the contrast down a bit, especially if it’s a newer TV.
Plasmas, being phosphor-based, innately have very good contrast that you can turn it down a little.
These recommendations should help you out preventing image retention on your plasma TV or reduce any image retention issues if suffered.
